Kedarnath Temple – History and Significance

Kedarnath Temple is one of the most important Shiva temples in India. It is located in the Garhwal Himalayas and is associated with the Panch Kedar tradition and the Char Dham pilgrimage of Uttarakhand.

According to local religious tradition, the Pandavas searched for Lord Shiva after the Mahabharata. Shiva is believed to have appeared at Kedarnath in the form of a bull, with the hump regarded as the form worshipped at Kedarnath.

The present stone temple is traditionally associated with Adi Shankaracharya, while the wider religious history of the site is much older. Uttarakhand Tourism states that the present structure is believed to be more than 1,200 years old.

The temple stands against the Himalayan peaks and is surrounded by the natural beauty of the Kedarnath Valley.

Kedarnath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and is situated at an altitude of approximately 3,583 metres. Surrounded by snow-covered Himalayan peaks, it is among the most important pilgrimage destinations for Hindus.
